Burglar-proof your home before going on vacation

August 7, 2012

(NC)—Rest easy on your next vacation knowing your home is safe from intruders with these tips from the travel experts at Econo Lodge hotels:

Zip your lips: As tempted as you are to spread the news that you're heading off on a well-deserved vacation, the whole world doesn't need to know your house will be empty for an extended period of time. Keep the news off Facebook, Twitter and any other social networking site.

Light up: Invest in a motion sensor light for your front and back entrances to deter would-be prowlers and a timer for your indoor lights to create the impression that you're coming and going throughout the day.

Wait a minute Mr. Postman: Have the post office put your mail on hold while you're away by setting up a mail hold at your local post office or on the Canada Post website.

Tried and true: It should go without saying, but just in case: double-check doors and windows are locked, remove your spare key from its hiding place, disable automatic garage doors and enlist the help of a trusted neighbour or friend to check in on your property from time to time.

Last but not least: Enjoy your vacation.
